CORI◊ Robot-Assisted Knee Replacement

At Litchfield Hills Orthopedic Associates, our specialty-trained doctors are dedicated experts who specialize in providing exceptional orthopedic care. That's why board-certified orthopedic surgeon Frank J. Pompo, M.D., is proud to offer total and partial knee replacement using the CORI Surgical System to help patients get back to an active, healthy lifestyle.

CORI Surgical System

What Is CORI?

A state-of-the-art robot-assisted platform, the CORI Surgical System is designed to help surgeons accurately and precisely place and align an implant during knee replacement surgery. Unlike other robot-assisted knee replacement systems, this surgical system works without the need for a CT scan or MRI. Instead, it uses image-free, smart mapping to build a 3D model of the patient’s knee with a computer. This model helps surgeons create a patient-specific surgical plan that is based on the unique shape and motion of their patient’s knee.

Are You a Candidate for CORI Knee Replacement?

You may be a good candidate for knee replacement surgery using the CORI system if you:

  • Have severe, chronic knee pain due to osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, or post-traumatic arthritis
  • Cannot participate in or complete your normal daily activities due to knee pain
  • No longer experience sufficient relief through nonsurgical treatment options, like anti-inflammatories, pain medication, and/or physical therapy

To determine if partial knee replacement or total knee replacement using the CORI system is right for you, your orthopedic surgeon will perform a thorough evaluation and ask you questions about your knee pain and how it affects your daily life. Dr. Pompo may also order additional tests, such as an MRI or X-rays, to get a better understanding of the source of your pain. If Dr. Pompo determines that only part of the knee is causing your pain, he may recommend partial knee replacement.

What to Expect During Partial Knee Replacement

Before your partial knee replacement, Dr. Pompo will use the CORI system to create a 3D model of your knee joint. Using this information, Dr. Pompo will determine the size and position of the implant as well as create an individualized surgical plan.

During your partial knee replacement surgery, Dr. Pompo will use the CORI handpiece, a robot-assisted surgical tool, to remove the damaged section of your knee joint. The handheld robotic tool utilizes the 3D model of your knee to help Dr. Pompo accurately differentiate between the damaged area of your knee that needs to be removed and the healthy areas. Once the damaged part of your knee has been removed, the implant can be placed.

Following surgery, you will start your personalized recovery plan. Dr. Pompo will provide you with guidelines to follow as well as discuss which activities are okay and which ones should be avoided for the time being. As your recovery progresses, Dr. Pompo will let you know when you can start participating in certain activities again.

What to Expect During Total Knee Replacement

Just like during the preoperative phase of partial knee replacement, Dr. Pompo will create a 3D model of the anatomy of your knee using the CORI Surgical System. He will then use this information to create a personalized surgical plan to follow during your procedure.

In the operating room, Dr. Pompo will use the CORI handpiece to remove the damaged bone and cartilage within your knee joint. Once all the affected soft tissue and bone have been removed, he will use the handheld robotic tool to prepare the knee joint and accurately place the implants. Dr. Pompo will then ensure the movement and balance is correct before closing the incisions.

After your total knee replacement procedure, you will start your personalized recovery plan. Dr. Pompo will provide you with guidelines to follow, and he will also go over which activities are okay as well as which ones you should avoid for the time being. As your recovery progresses, the activities you can participate in will increase.
