Jennifer A. D’Amico, D.P.M., fellowship-trained podiatric surgeon at Litchfield Hills Orthopedic Associates, recently provided free foot health screenings, tech scans and orthotics for the Special Olympics Florida State Fall Classic in Orlando, Fla., Nov. 9 – 10. At the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex, Dr. D’Amico helped screen 582 athletes over two days alongside a team of volunteers and medical professionals with Special Olympics Healthy Athletes, a health program designed to help Special Olympics athletes improve their health and fitness. Those with foot and ankle needs close to home are encouraged to call (860) 482-8539 for an appointment with Dr. D’Amico in Torrington at 245 Alvord Park Road or in Bristol at 281 N. Main St.
Dr. D’Amico serves as a clinical director for Fit Feet, the podiatric division of Special Olympics Healthy Athletes, and was invited to the Florida State Fall Classic by Florida Fit Feet Director Dr. Marc Colaluce. During the event, she helped athletes by performing overall foot and ankle health exams, including skin, nail and range of motion exams. Tech scans were also performed using a computerized mat to define biomechanical pressure points and associated foot needs, such as flat feet or high arches, to see if the athletes would benefit from any of the orthotic insoles Fit Feet had available for them.
“I have been part of the Special Olympics community for years, and it is always very rewarding to work with athletes and other volunteers at these events,” says Dr. D’Amico. “From ensuring athletes have proper shoe sizes to fitting them for inserts and seeing them compete, I enjoy every minute with the athletes and our Healthy Athletes teams. It’s a privilege to see all the smiles and help in keeping athletes healthy and safe.”
Previously, Dr. D’Amico served as a Fit Feet clinical director for Special Olympics Southern California for three years and volunteered at events throughout the year, including the Special Olympics World Games held in Los Angeles. Clinical directors for Fit Feet are required to have a Doctor of Podiatric Medicine degree or have similar training. In addition to running screenings for events, Fit Feet clinical directors train local volunteers, work within the guidelines of each local program to coordinate events, maintain proper data collection and quality assurance and develop follow-up protocols or referrals for athletes.
