Dr. Frank Pompo Performs First Unicompartmental Knee Replacement at Litchfield Hills Surgery Center

Specialty-trained joint replacement surgeon Frank J. Pompo, M.D., performed the first unicompartmental knee replacement surgery at the Litchfield Hills Surgery Center on June 18. Dr. Pompo will continue to offer this advanced procedure for area patients in the outpatient setting at the surgery center, located at 245 Alvord Park Road, Building B, on-site at the practice’s Torrington office. Patients in need of advanced joint care are encouraged to call (860) 482-8539 to schedule an appointment with Dr. Pompo at the practice’s Torrington office or Bristol office, located at 281 N. Main St.

Dr. Pompo says that a unicompartmental knee replacement, also called a partial knee replacement, is a good option for those patients whose knee arthritis is confined to a certain area, or compartment, of the knee. This minimally invasive technique provides patients with many benefits, including a quicker recovery than a total knee replacement and less pain throughout the process because there is less disruption to the knee joint and surrounding muscle.

“Offering this procedure at our outpatient surgery center is one of the ways we can help patients get back to doing what they love sooner. Additionally, by saving the healthy bone and tissue in the knee, the replacement often feels more like a natural knee than a traditional knee replacement,” says Dr. Pompo. “At Litchfield Hills Orthopedic Associates, we’re dedicated to helping members of our community redefine limits.”

Benefits of the outpatient partial knee replacement Dr. Pompo offers include:

  • Ability to recover comfortably at home.
  • More of the patient’s own knee tissue is preserved.
  • Normal, natural-feeling knee function.
  • Reduced costs and lowered risk of infection due to the outpatient setting.
  • Shorter recovery time than a total joint replacement.

As a board-certified orthopedic surgeon specializing in joint replacement surgery, Dr. Pompo offers compassionate, experienced total joint care, including total knee and hip replacement, knee arthroscopy, joint injections and fracture care. Dr. Pompo is expertly trained, having earned his medical degree from Drexel University College of Medicine in Philadelphia before completing his residency in orthopedic surgery at The University of Toledo Medical Center in Toledo, Ohio. Dr. Pompo has also completed additional training and certification in the techniques required for unicompartmental knee replacement.
