| Arthroscopic surgery
Some types of orthopedic procedures can be performed with arthroscopic surgery,
which is surgery that is performed through tiny incisions in the skin. A special
lighted scope and thin instruments are inserted into these incisions, and
the scope produces magnified images that the surgeon views on a television
monitor while operating with the instruments.
Because the incisions required for arthroscopic surgery are tiny, there is
less scarring and recovery can be quicker. Knee, shoulder, and wrist surgeries are
most commonly performed with this technique.
Comprehensive fracture care
We provide emergency and ongoing care for patients who have been injured in
an accident and those who have broken bones. An important component of that
care is rehabilitation after the initial injury has been treated.
Comprehensive spinal care
Back pain is one of the most common reasons why people seek orthopedic care.
We offer a full range of treatments for back pain, from anti-inflammatory
medication to surgery, depending on the cause.
We specialize in surgery on the cervical or lumbar discs of the spine. We
can correct problems caused by a disc injury or degeneration, osteoarthritis,
osteoporosis, compressed nerves, and damage to the muscles or ligaments of
the back. We also can correct deformities of the back caused by conditions
such as ankylosing spondylitis or scoliosis.
Hand Surgery
We have a board certified hand surgeon who performs a variety of complex and
comprehensive surgical procedures including:
- tendon repairs
- carpal tunnel syndrome
- joint arthroscopy
- traumatic injury care
Occupational Therapy
Our occupational therapists specialize in the treatment of upper extremity injuries, in addition
to orthopedic and neurological conditions affecting the upper extremities. They have expertise
in the fabrication and application of custom splints.
Physiatry
Physiatry is also called "physical medicine and rehabilitation."
This branch of medicine focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of problems
with the musculoskeletal system (muscles and bones). Physiatrists primarily
use "physical" means, such as physical therapy and medication, instead
of of surgery.
Physiatrists must complete four years of medical school and four years of
residency training. Because most problems with the musculoskeletal system
are linked to the back, physiatrists have particular skill in treating back
pain.
Physical therapy
Our full range of comprehensive physical therapy services
includes:
- Scoliosis program to treat curvature of the spine
- Manual therapy, which uses the massage and manipulation of the body's
soft tissues to relieve pain and promote healing
- Preparing the body before orthopedic surgery and rehabilitation after
surgery
- General strength training
- Rehabilitation after a bone fracture
- Outpatient prosthetic rehabilitation, to help individuals adjust to an
artificial limb or other external appliance
- Rehabilitation after a back or neck injury
- Rehabilitation after a sports injury
- Comprehensive musculoskeletal evaluation to determine the cause of and
best treatment for acute or chronic pain
Scoliosis surgery
Scoliosis is a condition in which a person’s spine curves from side
to side. It often is detected in children as part of a routine screening at
school.
In people with a minor curvature, wearing a back brace can halt the progression
of the curve. This can be temporary, however, because in some cases the curving
may resume once the brace is discontinues.
Those with significant curvature often are candidates for surgery. Surgery
for scoliosis involves grafting bone in the back to correct the curvature,
and placing metallic implants in the back to hold it in the correct position
until the bone graft fuses.
Spinal injections
An injection of medication into your back can help relieve pain and help you
move better. Spinal injections can help locate the source of your pain by
numbing certain areas of your back.
Sports medicine and rehabilitation
Sports medicine specializes in the prevention and treatment of injuries resulting
from training and participation in athletic events. It’s not just professional
athletes who can suffer a sports injury – it can happen to anyone involved
in athletic activity.
Most sports injuries involve muscle sprains, strains, and tears. We offer
treatment for the full range, including shin splints, runner’s knee,
pulled hamstring muscles, ankle sprains, tennis elbow, bursitis, joint dislocations,
and more.
Total joint surgery
Joint replacement surgery can restore a pain-free life to people suffering
from arthritis or an injury to a joint.
Virtually any joint in the body can be replaced with a synthetic joint.
The major joints that are replaced are the knee, hip, and shoulder, but replacement
can be performed for the elbow, wrist, ankle, and fingers as well.
The incisions necessary for joint replacement have become much smaller as
technology and surgical tools have improved, which has made recovery easier.
Today, joint replacement is a consideration for more and more individuals,
regardless of age.
